An Instant Pot is a type of pressure cooker that can be used to cook dried bean. Using an Instant Pot will allow you to cook your dried beans more quick than if you used the stove to cook them. Additionally, using an Instant Pot will allow you to avoid the long period of cooking that dried beans require.
However, different varieties of beans require different amount of time to cook because the textures of the beans may differ. For instance, black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, and navy beans all requires specific times to cook. If the beans are undercooked, they may be too hard to eat and they may contain lectins, which can make individuals feel uncomfortably in there stomach.
How to Cook Dried Beans in an Instant Pot
If the beans are overcooked they will become soft to the point of becoming a paste. Most beans requires a 1:3 ratio of water to beans. However, if the beans are denser like chickpeas and fava beans, the ratio should be 1:4.
Additionally, you can soak the beans in cold water the night before cooking for even betterer digestion. However, it is also possible to cook the beans without soak them in water. The soaked beans will have a better texture than those cooked without soaking.
However, beans should not exceed the maximum line on the filling line of an Instant Pot. If the beans do exceed the line, they could produce foam that may clog the steam valve of the Instant Pot. It is important to add both salt and aromatics like garlic or bay leaf to the beans.
Adding salt will season the beans and maintain there texture. Using one teaspoon of salt for each cup of dry beans is recommended. Additionally, adding aromatics will enhance the flavor of the beans.
Aromatics may also reduce the amount of foam that the beans will produce in the Instant Pot. However, you should not add acidic ingredients like lemon juice to the beans until after they have been cooked. These acid may make the skins of the beans tough during the cooking process.
Using a natural release of the pressure in the Instant Pot is the recommended method of releasing the steam in the pot after the beans have finished cooking. Allowing the pressure to natural release for ten to twenty minutes will maintain the skins of the beans and prevent them from bursting in the Instant Pot. Using the quick release of steam from the beans may cause the beans to burst inside the Instant Pot, as well as release some of the steam from the pot.
To cook beans in an Instant Pot, first sort the beans to remove small stone or debris. Next, rinse the beans. Decide whether to soak the beans in cold water overnight or to cook the beans without soaking them.
Place the beans and water, salt and aromatics into the Instant Pot. Place the lid on the Instant Pot and select the high pressure setting for the appropriate length of time for the type of beans being prepared. Allow for a natural release of pressure from the Instant Pot.
Additionally, it is also possible to cook large quantity of beans in an Instant Pot. After cooking the beans, portion the beans into two cup portion and place them into a freezer-safe container. You can freeze the beans in the cooking liquid for up to six months.
Once frozen, the beans can be thawed and use in various recipe like soups or salads. Because one cup of dried beans will yield three cups of cooked beans, it is more beneficial to cook large quantities of dried beans in an Instant Pot.
