💡 Tip: Always buy 10% more bottles than your calculation requires. Bottles can crack during capping, some may already be cracked, and you'll want extras in case you over-fill a few. A case of 24 bottles for a standard 5-gallon batch gives you just enough — get two cases to be safe.
💡 Tip: Account for batch loss when calculating. A typical 5-gallon homebrew batch loses about 0.5 gallons to trub (sediment) and yeast cake at the bottom of the fermenter. Add another 0.25 gallons for transfer losses. Our calculator defaults to a 10% loss factor to cover this automatically.
💡 Tip: Sanitize all bottles thoroughly before filling. Use a no-rinse sanitizer like Star San diluted to 1 oz per 5 gallons of water. Unsanitized bottles are the most common cause of infected homebrew batches. Let bottles drain but do not rinse — the small amount of sanitizer left behind is harmless.
