The second style of drop flower tips are ridged tips that create petals with straight lines. Because royal icing is stiff and holds the ridges of the tip, these tips are used with royal icing. The third style of drop flower tips is plain six petal tips that create flat petals.
The last style of drop flower tips is rosette tips that are used to create large, full flowers with a very wide opening to the tip. To use drop flower tips correctly, a person must follow the steps. First, a person fill a piping bag with medium consistency buttercream.
The bag is held at a right angle to the cake surface because if the bag isnt held at this angle, the petals will be unevenly. The baker light touched the drop flower tip to the cake and squeezes the bag. If the tip that is being used is a twisted tip, the bag is twisted slight.
However, if a plain drop flower tip is used, the bag does not have to be twisted. Lastly, the drop flower tip is lifted straight up off the cake. The tip must be lifted in this fashion because dragging the tip will create uneven petals.
The consistency of the icing that is used with drop flower tips is important. If the icing is too soft, the petals may not hold. The medium consistency of buttercream is useful because the icing is soft enough to pipe but firm enough to hold it’s shape.
If royal icing is used, it will dry very hard and allow the flowers to be stored for long period. Royal icing is also useful because it will keep the flower design intact. However, if runny icing is used with drop flower tips, it will create blob of icing instead of petals.
There are common mistakes that can be made with drop flower tips. One of the most common is using icing that is too soft. If icing is too soft, the petals will begin to slide off the flower.
Another mistake that can be made is holding the bag at the wrong angle to the cake. This will result in the flowers looking more lopsided. Another mistake is applying too much pressure on the drop flower tip.
