Crackers with Cheese form a pair that already exists for many centuries. Before, it served as food for sailors, soldiers and settlers Since the 1850s, that mix became common in the menus of American taverns and pubs. In England one calls it simply Cheese and Crackers.
The ideal mixes of Cheese and Crackers go beyond the base of simply laying local Cheese on a Cracker. That creates something like a blend that brings out the best parts of every piece. Sometimes the Cracker only must not block the natural taste of the Cheese.
How to Serve Cheese and Crackers
Such a Cracker that does not steal the attention of the Cheese flavor results in the best pairing.
For a simple Cheese dish with Crackers, well include at least one from three kinds of Cheese: hard, soft and blue. Famous hard and half hard Cheese types are Swiss, cheddar, parmesan and gruyere. Among soft Cheese types is goat Cheese.
Triple cream and Cheese types with soft rind go well with water Crackers, buttery Crackers or crostini. Fruit or seasoned Crackers add sweet or salty contrast. Softer Cheese types more easily spread, so they work four appetizers.
Eating Cheese with Crackers as an appetizer is mainly an American custom. Elsewhere one favors Cheese with slices of toasted baguette. It is not rare that a Cheese plate is served as dessert.
Choices for Crackers are many everywhere. Water Crackers are crispy and have neutral taste. Triscuit Crackers work with almost every Cheese.
Water Crackers from Carr are popular. Rustic bakery sourdough Crackers are lightly salted and go with everything. Panzanella croccantini Crackers go well with more creamy Cheese.
Wheat or multigrain Crackers also work well. Even a simple lightly salted Cracker with a bit of brie and a touch of sweet warm pepper jelly forms a solid pair.
Fruits beside Cheese types create a wonderful mix of tenderness and saltiness. Bits of apple, grape or mango work well. Raisins, figs and dried fruits are also good extras.
A handy way to arrange a board is the 3:3:3:3 ratio… Three meats, three Cheese types, three kinds of produce and three extras. Place big bits first, lay smaller ones around them and add a lot of Crackers or bread.
Homemade Cheese Crackers are also possible. They need only six things: Cheese, flour, cornflour, salt, butter and water. No preservatives are needed.
Homemade versions give strong, bold Cheese taste and are much better than store-bought ones. If toasted Cheese or white pizza counts as ameal, then Cheese and Crackers should be too.
