Planning canapes require careful calculation. The number of canapes that you plan to serve will determine whether your guests feels satisfied after the event or if they feel hungry. Various factor will impact the number of canapes that you need to plan for, such as length of event, the style of service for the canapes, the type of canapes that will be provided, the variety of the canapes, the number of guest that will attend the event, and the nutritional content of the canapes.
The length of the event will have a major impact on the number of canapes that you must plan for. If the event will last for only a few hour and will occur prior to dinner, then you can plan for approximately four or five canape per guest. However, if the event will last for two hours of cocktail service, then you will need to plan for more canapes because guests will consume more food throughout the event.
How Many Canapes to Make
Plan for an additional number of canapes for every additional half hour of event length. The service style for the canapes will also impact the number of canapes that you will need to prepare. If the event will use passed tray of canapes, then there will be fewer canapes that need to be prepared since the guests will only take the canapes that they want.
However, if the event will use a self serve buffet, more canapes will need to be prepared since guests may ignore certain canapes quick while others will get eaten. The type of canapes that will be provided will also have an impact on the number of canapes that must be prepared. If the canapes that will be served are heavy with meat and sauces, they will satisfy the guests more quick than light canapes, such as vegetable toasts.
Therefore, there will need to be fewer heavy canapes than light canapes. Additionally, ensure that at least one-third of the canapes are vegetarian because there will be vegetarian guests and vegetarian canapes will ensure that all guests has something to eat. The variety of canapes will be important to the success of the canapes but will also make the planning of the event more difficultly.
If there are three types of canapes, the kitchen will find it easy to prepare the canapes. However, if there are six types of canapes, the kitchen will need to prepare the canapes even so that one flavor does not run out before the other flavor. Ensure that there is a balance of rich and light canapes to give the guests variety in the flavor that they eat.
Eight percent of the number of canapes that you plan for will need to be prepared as an extra portion in case some of the guests do not attend the event. Additionally, consider the nutritional content of the canapes. Canapes that contains protein and fat will keep the guests full for longer than canapes with only carbohydrate.
Based off the length of the event, the type of service for the canapes, and the appetite of the guests, you may find that 500 canapes will be needed for a party of 50 guests for a 2.5-hour event. If the canapes are to be served on passed tray, there will be fewer canapes needed because only the guests will take the canapes. Following these steps will ensure that there are the proper amount of canapes for the guests.
