can you bake glass tupperware

There is a movement towards glass food containers over plastic these days and the Tupperware company has kept up with the trends.

Tupperware has been producing its classic plastic range for over 75 years now but did you know that they now also have a new range of glass containers? They call it “PremiaGlass”.

The containers are made of borosilicate glass and the clip-on lids are made of the original Tupperware that we all know and love. There’s a silicone seal on the lid to prevent spillage.

PremiaGlass is 100% BPA and lead-free so it’s perfectly safe for food storage, baking, refrigeration, and freezing. You can even use it in the microwave and dishwasher.

What Type of Glass is Tupperware PremiaGlass Made Of?

Borosilicate glass is more durable than normal glass and is also 10% lighter. Plus, it is strong and durable which is good news if you are a little clumsy.

It is a heat-resistant material and can withstand temperatures of up to 300 degrees Celcius or as low as minus 20 degrees.

This means it can go safely from the freezer to the microwave or preheated oven without warping, cracking, or shattering. Of course, you must take the plastic Tupperware lid off first.

The glass is also non-porous so it doesn’t absorb food odors or become stained.

Can You Bake with Glass Tupperware in the Oven?

The short answer is yes, you can bake food in the new glass Tupperware containers with a few conditions. First, you must remove the plastic lid.

Second, the oven temperature should not exceed 300 degrees Celcius. This is hot enough for any oven use as most baking or roasting is done at about 180 degrees Celcius.

Be Mindful of Rapid Changes in Temperature

In the majority of cases, glass breaks in the oven when it undergoes quick temperature changes (this is known as “thermal shock”). This is because the glass is unable to expand fast enough without breaking.

Although the Tupperware company says that you can take their containers directly from the freezer to the oven, we recommend not doing this.

Rather, defrost the frozen dish in the microwave first, then heat it in the oven. It’s fine to put a room-temperature Tupperware glass dish into the oven though.

Beware of Baking in the Wrong Glass Type

While it’s safe to bake in glass Tupperware because it’s made of tempered glass, bear in mind that not all types of glass are suitable for baking in.

Non-tempered glass bowls, jugs, and dishes are not made to withstand oven temperatures and will shatter, crack, or break in the oven.

Avoid Extremely High Temperatures

Glass Tupperware is safe to temperatures of 300 degrees Celcius but be careful of using it under extremely hot oven or grill conditions.

For instance, we don’t recommend that you place it directly under a hot grill or use it in a Weber-style barbeque. Also, avoid placing over hot coals when cooking outdoors. Metal dishes would be safer and more suitable in situations like this.
