Poma sugar from apples: a natural low-sugar sweetener
From the apples one pulls sugar to naturally sweeten various recipes. The method involves turning the sweet parts from apples, what results in Swedish fruit sweetener. It works well for home baking, cooking or blending in drinks.
When one turns it into powder form, poma sugar acts almost the same as the sugar powder of a professional baker. Beyond that, it serves as apple-flavored sweetener for teas.
Here there is a vast range of products from poma sugar. Between them are organic variants and flavored final sugar powders, that work in all types of recipes. Like this there are solutions for different demand and preferences.
The sugar in average apples presents a bit other image. Apple of middle size, weighing around 182 grams, stores about 19 grams of sugar. Up around 10 percent of apple is made up of sugar.
From the sugar in apples around 60 percent is fructose. The rest splits between sucrose and glucose, each holding around 20 percent of the free sugar parts.
Also apples carry fiber, that helps to control how the body absorbs the sugar. Because of that apples do not cause heavy tops and bottoms in the blood sugar level, compared too some other sweet foods. Fiber helps to protect against diabetes of the second type and support better control of blood sugar.
One middle apple has at least 3 grams of fiber, together with 25 grams of carbohydrates and around 95 calories.
Compared to cake, sweets, ice or soda drink, apples have little sugar. For one proper apple comes 19 grams of sugar, while one usual soda stores 31 grams. Also each gram apples beat bananas in lower sugar.
Hundred grams of apple have around 10 grams of sugar, while 100 grams of banana store around 12 grams. Even so compared to vegetables like celery, cucumbers and horseradish, apples are notentirely low in sugar.
In apples the sugar happens naturally. It is not added sugar, so it does not count toward the advised day limit of 25 grams for added sugar. Candy bars and soda drinks do count to that limit, but whole fruits do not.
Also apple provides vitamins, minerals and fiber, that gives the body something useful, unlike a candy bar that mostly is only sugar and water.
Some types of apples have even lower sugar index, what is useful for keeping blood sugar levels stable. Even so no apple is entirely free of sugar.
