Suddenly, your Ninja Foodi Dual Zone quit operating. Push the power button. Nothing. Press the start button. Nothing. The screen flashed purple with SHUT on the display.
It appeared catastrophic. It was a code for dinner plans gone bad. What does that mean? What could it be? It is a motherboard problem. That means an expensive repair or outright replacement. But take a step back. What is the entire appliance?
Understanding the SHUT Error Code
Pressing the buttons was responsive and all of the cooking functionality appear on the control panel. But no cooking commenced. It was an error related to a safety check.
In other words, the machine won’t function if it believes there’s a problem, which is a good thing. It’s basic logic, but the error message was unhelpful because it didn’t help identify the source of the issue. It simply halted execution, which stinks.
The control panel showed that all cooking function were still available, and the buttons was responsive. However, nothing started cooking because the error was specific to a safety check.
In some cases, the cooking basket might not be in the slot.
This will happen if you didn’t put the cooking basket in before hitting the start button. When that happens, the air fryer display say “SHUT.” Why? Because there’s no basket in there, and the air fryer won’t do anything unless the basket is set up correctly. It’s just a simple safety measure.
To resolve, pull the basket out and shove it back in. Ensure it clicks into place and then press start again. Should of be good to go.
But even then there’s still a chance you put it in wrong… or maybe the basket just didn’t engage correctly in place. Double check to make sure the basket is all the way down and locked in place (it will lock with the little switch on the bottom).
But if it says “SHUT”, there’s a bit of a problem now, as that relates to a tiny little switch that engages when the basket locks into place. And that means that the zone won’t be turned back on unless the switch tells the unit the basket is in place.
Sometimes jiggling doesn’t help. At this point you’ll have to think about opening the unit to take a closer look.
Grab a screwdriver and go to the back, where you will find a screw near the power cord socket.
Take a screw driver and head to the rear of your Ninja Foodi Dual Zone; there’s a screw located just beside the power cord socket. Carefully remove this screw and take a moment to notice the model number listed on the back. Save the screw on the counter and gently pull away the top cover to expose what’s going on inside.
Inside, you’ll notice the interior basket lock as well as the heating element(s). Be careful! These parts is delicate and one misstep can damage it.
The basket slots has little switches at the bottom of each compartment. The switches close when the basket is pushed into place. That closes the circuit to let the machine know the basket is there.
Sometimes the switch gets jammed up or the food will block it from working properly. Check around the switches closely for any signs of wear or obstructions. If the switch looks good and nothing appears to be blocking it, then it’s a bit more puzzling.
So now what? You might decide to open the unit up to inspect it, but even after reassembling it, nothing changed. Plug it in, push start, and insert the basket snugly, but still; same error message.
You opened the machine up and found no broken parts, all of the switches seemed intact, and everything seemed wired tight. At this point you’re out of ideas. It is time for a pro, or perhaps time for a new one.
You don’t want to do any further guessing as that might make things worse, so simply close it up and screw it back together. It is still the same issue.
Lesson 2 states that “SHUT” generaly indicates a seat problem.
Go check the basket, make sure it’s all the way in there. Also go clean it out, sometimes that’s all that’s required. But if everything’s good with the hardware then it could be something more.
So you checked it out thoroughly and didn’t see any serious defects. Everything looks okay inside. Whew! Good to know, but still no dice. Still an issue.
And then you had to call support because you needed new parts or some sort of firmware update. The fryer is sitting on the counter and until further notice, it’s just wasting space.
