If you’ve added too much coffee, the De’Longhi Magnifica S Smart will flash a red triangle and stop making coffee entirely. To fix this, adjust your grind settings immediatly. Most of the time when this occurs, it’s because machine ground beans too finely for amount of coffee selected.
First thing you want to do is check out the grind adjustment dial. If your dial is set too fine then this will result in the machine dispensing too many grounds for each cup and this quickly trips sensor.
Inspecting The Internal Mechanism
To correct this, simply adjust the dial upwards (to a higher number) which results in a coarser grind. Coarse grinds allows water to flow through quicker and require less coffee per shot.
This adjustment serve as the first line of defense against error.
Next you’ll want to examine your strength settings. Sometimes it’s not that the grinder is grinding, but that too much coffee are being allotted. Set the coffee strength too high and machine will push more coffee than what can fit in the brewing chamber (if the brew size is small).
To test this theory, lower the coffee strength setting. By doing so you prevent the machine from packing too much coffee into filter holder.
You reduce the coffee strength setting to see if it helps.
The proportions between the water and grounds are just right.
What you make will also be important. For this purpose, you’ll want to just hit regular Coffee button or the Espresso one.
The long coffee and double espresso options should not of been used, because they ask it to try to produce too much coffee and will trip up the overflow sensor. Just stick with the singles; that way you’re staying below risk limit on how many beans the grinder can chew through.
It is a small change that makes big difference in preventing errors.
A little goes a long way when it comes to avoiding mistakes.
If none of these adjustments seem to help, you’re thinking it’s probably a mechanical problem. Debris can build up and jam the grinder mechanism over time. You pop open the appliance and take a look at what’s going on inside.
Inside the grinder assembly, there is a rubber ring that should be removed. Once this is done, you can get right to the burrs and gears. You’ll want to check here for anything that might be blocking way to keep things moving smoothly.

The interior of gear housing is full of dark brown gook. It is the result off fine dust and the oil left behind by old coffee. The goop causes increased friction and prevents free rotation of the grinder.
You give the beige plastic gear housing a good cleaning. This removes obstruction and allows metal tube and its surroundings to move again. A clean grinder spin more smoothly and takes a dose measurement with greater accuracy.
This allows it to not have to fight pushing grounds through the chute.
The last part of this process is getting the inside assembly tightened up. The metal part spinning inside the white plastic gears rotate to tighten the inner bracket, holding everything in place.
If that bracket isn’t tightened, you’ll get some jamming issues or inconsistent grinding. By tightening the bracket back down it brings the whole grinding assembly back into line. Without that solid structure this thing won’t work right.
This makes it feel so much sturdier.
Turns out fixing the grinder is simple, just determine what’s wrong and go from there. In most cases, it was a matter of grinding too fine.
Wiping away accumulated grounds prevents further issues and jamming up. The red triangle is no longer flashing. It pulls perfect shots of espresso like always. Glad to have her running like new.
