Before you get started, though, make sure you unplug the machine. It’s basic safety stuff, and yet we can all be guilty of forgetting about it. Make sure that your espresso maker isn’t powered on; pull the cord out of its wall socket.

First you unplug it. Next, pull all the outside pieces off. First is the water reservoir. You just lift up on the back and it pops right off.
Inside the Machine
Then pull the coffee basket out. This clears a nice pathway to get further into the machine. Pulling those pieces aside really cleans up the work area.
There is more room.
This is where the hard part comes in. You take out all the screws that hold the casing on. Think of it as an upside down jigsaw puzzle. Watch out for all your screws and don’t lose them.
The outside casing starts coming off, screw by screw. Drill it off if you can. Your wrists will thank you for saving them from cramping.
Good enough.
After removing the fasteners, the outer panel lifts off. Removing that reveals the guts of the espresso maker as the shell separates from the internal chassis.
It’s heavy. It is heavier then I thought it would be.
You leave the machine in pieces on your workbench, looking at the innards of your espresso maker. Carefully set the shell down. No need to scratch the chrome.
It’s something.
You look in. The depth of it hits you right away. There are wires and tubing. There are gears. All kinds of stuff everywhere. Looks like a mess.
You see that there’s a motor with a fan on it. Colored wires come out of plastic connectors. Yellow, blue, and white lines crisscross each other. How do they all fit?
Yet, it’s organized chaos.
Then you lean in to inspect the circuitry. It’s all black plastic, except for a single green board. Various sections is connected by ribbon cables. Some stepper motors is visible next to the mechanical components.
Everything is tightly assembled. Very little room exists anywhere to move anything. Be careful not to tug on any of those loose ends.
It’s the end of the day and there’s no other option.
The grinder housing is made of white plastic.
The grinder housing is prominently located near the top. From there tubing runs to various places. Colored tubing is mixed with clear tubing. Solenoids can be seen as well. These regulate the water flow.
Overall, the set-up appears complex. Before long you’re simply looking at it and admiring the layout. And that’s only half the battle. Reassembly is another story entirely. That’s a story for another time. But it’s worth it.
Take a minute to admire all of the engineering. That’s a stainless steel body, and DeLonghi managed to fit a lot into it. Look at that front pressure gauge; there’s something going on in there.
Those knobs are for different things within. You can see how they link to the gears. How they lead back. Trace your way around.
This is true for now, at least.
Leave the machine in pieces on your work bench. Green mat keeps the floor protected. There is a pile of loose screws nearby. No hurry to get it put back together.
Sometimes just looking at it is enough. You want to remember how it all lays out so you can cover it up again. It helps you understand the machine better. Feels like cheating almost. Having seen inside gives you that edge. It makes a big difference.
It’s simple and time consuming. It requires patience removing all the fasteners. Make sure you account for every screw. One lost screw is a nightmare. Do not take any risks here.
Things are kept orderly. The work space is clean. There’s no mess to be cleaned up afterwards. You are done.
But maybe you will return to this one day. Today though, the teardown did what was needed. You can see how everything fits together. See the gears. See the motor. See the wiring harness. It’s all laid out there for you.
Now your first questions are answered. This thing is robust. It is made to last. And while you always risk assuming too much from those guesses, at least it seems that way. You appreciate the craftsmanship more.
Be careful when taking apart appliances. Respect what’s inside of them. Handle everything carefully. Don’t force anything. When something doesn’t budge, quit. Forcing things will break them. And you’ve learned that the hard way.
This is not easy by any means, but it can be done. You can do it with proper tools. The right tools make all the difference. Your drill proves useful here. It saves you time. It’s not even close to easy.
The session ends. You leave it open. There, exposed and vulnerable. The internal components wait for you to return.
Maybe someday you’ll get around to cleaning it. Someday dust will settle in cracks. It will build up and slow things down. But for now, you just wish you had known how it worked. If only you knew what was inside of it. But for now, you just wanted to understand the structure first. But then again, knowledge is power. So thanks.
