A cheese board is an ideal snack for festivals, because it holds cheeses, fruits, nuts and other treats. It ranks between the simplest ways to present foods because one does not need any cooking skills. Even some not too skilled folk manage to arrange attractive sets from meats and cheeses.
Such cheese setups work for every season, crowd or event.
How to Make a Cheese Board
Four to three cheeses give charm through a mix of flavor. If one passes five types, the tastes risk to blend too much. Even a board with only one cheese can become truly unique, if one combines it with many different sides.
The secret lies in picking cheeses with different flavor and textures. For instance, soft brie, sharp cheddar or aged gouda together with blue cheese like gorgonzola create a nice trio. Between the creamy types find yourself Époisses or Robiola Bosina.
For medium cheeses, sharp cheddar or Gruyère work well. Aged tpyes like gouda or Grana Padano work to enrich the set well.
Blue cheese St. Agur has a creamy quality and is not too strong. English Stilton stays the traditional even blue. Shropshire Blue, an orange cheddar-typical blue cheese, truly impresses.
Garlic cheese with a cover from garlic, onions or peppercorns forms another bold offer.
Combine the cheeses with crackers, bread, nuts and a bit of mustard, olives or honey. Fruits, that already keep easily, simplify the cause. For an elegant touch, honeycomb and quality olives add luxury too the board.
Preserved treats go in little bowls or cups. Even so, the cheeses should be the highlight of the board itself.
Stay with classic meats like paté, rillettes, prosciutto and speck, that perfectly match. For every person, two to three units of meat and cheese work as snack amount. When the cheese board itself is the main dish, seven to eight units of cheese per folk is the right amount.
Serving the cheeses in two parts helps to keep them fresh.
Wooden boards are preferred because of their look and use. Wood gives a rustic feeling and well highlights the cheeses. Marble comes as a second option.
For two to four folks, a board of six to ten inches works. If one wants a bigger spread with several cheeses, a board of eighteen by twelve inches gives theright space.
Cheese boards charm because of the easy prep. The trick is simply to pile everything on it. A cheese seller becomes the best partner for making an impressive setup, so asking advice at the cheese shop always helps.
