Chai Tea ranks between those drinks that wakes funny discussion about the name. The term “chai” does come from the Indian word for “tea”, that itself comes from Chinese “cha”. Like this “Chai Tea” matches to “tea tea”, what in India would sound entirely absurd.
Even so in the West “chai” got its own meaning, it now points to special spicy tea, and almost each gets that correctly.
All About Chai Tea
Traditional Indian tea calls masala chai, prepared with spices, ginger and milk. “Masala” in Indian language wants to say mix of spices. It starts with strong black tea, that quietly heats with milk and a blend of flavors like ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and black pepper.

Spices one boils long before adding milk and tea leaves. Good method is quietly boiling spices in water, later add milk and tea, leave it to settle and then filter through a fine screen. Whole spices even will wash and reuse many times.
Best prepare masala chai using fresh whole spices, crush or grind them to release the whole aroma. Important to also use good tea. The resulting chai must have sweet and spicy taste with a mild burn in the bottom of the throat.
