Honey nut Cheerios are made of sweetened whole grain oat cereal that combines real honey with natural almond flavor. The brand appeared for the first time in 1979 as a separate line of the traditional Cheerios products. Its unique appeal comes from the mix of honey and almond that makes it much more sweet than the simple version and that certainly explains its big popularity.
Bits of the cereal form little rings and are gluten-free.
All About Honey Nut Cheerios
Here something interesting to know: Honey nut Cheerios did not always carry real nuts. Until 2005, real nuts belonged to the recipe, but in 2006 they removed them and replaced them with natural flavoring. Like this, although the name points otherwise, in the bag there are no real nuts anymore.
Even so, if someone suffers from nut allergy, it is not a bad idea to carry an EpiPen, I heard warning stories of allergy suffeers many times.
The difference between regular Cheerios and the Honey nut type comes down to one main element: the honey coating. For Honey nut Cheerios, that addition removes the need to add Sugar. Regular Cheerios have almost one gram more Sugar and skip flavoring entirely.
From a nutrition viewpoint, the simple version wins, because the Honey nut adds Sugar and flavors. But honestly? Compared too other cereals on the shelves today, Honey nut Cheerios is not a bad choice, if you want something fast and delicious.
One serving holds more Sugar than three Oreo cookies… That really opens the eyes. In ranks of cereals, only Fruity Pebbles beat it with a higher Sugar amount.
Calories come mostly from carbohydrates. We talk about around 118 calories per serving, 200 milligrams of sodium, 23 grams of carbohydrates and under 10 grams of Sugar. Notice those figures do not describe all of what you pour in the bowl.
Honey nut Cheerios work for a healthy diet and can help lower cholesterol. Every serving gives around 22 grams of whole grains together with fiber and vitamins. The list of ingredients seems pretty basic: whole grain oats, Sugar, oat bran, corn syrup, honey, brown Sugar syrup, salt and oils.
The brand grew beyond the original recipe now. Honey nut Cheerios Medley Crunch mixes the typical taste with crispy pieces and crunchy clusters for more texture. There are also Honey nut Cheerios Minis and the Treat Bars, little cereal bars with golden honey, made specially for eating on the go.
Cheerios offer many flavors like Apple Cinnamon, Chocolate, Multigrain and Oat Crunch. You can buy a 32-ounce bag, that works for a quick meal or for breakfast. If you want less Sugar, adding a drizzle of honey to plain Cheerios bringsyou pretty close to the Honey nut flavor.
