chai tea latte are delicious warm drinks made from black tea, various spices and milk. It comes from India, where “chai” simply means “tea”. So saying “chai tea latte” is basically “tea-tea-latte”, but in the United States people use the two words the same way so that it no really matters.
For chai latte you need mainly black tea, at least one kind of spice and milk. Typical spices are cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and black pepper. The modern version of chai tea latte differs from the traditional by the addition of foamed warm milk and sweet extras, which gives a creamy, sweet taste.
What is a chai tea latte
You prepare chai latte like a regular latte, only swapping the espresso for strong chai tea and adding steamed milk.
There are three kinds of drinks called chai. One is made from thick, sweet chai concentrate mixed with foamed milk. Another one uses a tea bag labeled “chai tea latte”, that holds a mix of tea and spices.
And really traditional chai is prepared by cooking everything on the stove. The recipes range a lot by region.
Homemade chai latte has a spicy, warm taste of chai, that is a bit sweetened and softened by foamed milk. Starbucks uses two-percent milk for there version. For a richer drink try whole milk, or even a mix of half-milk and half or heavy cream.
Paleo and vegan versions can use maple syrup and non-dairy milk. For a low-carb version you replace honey with a sugar-free option and mix almond milk with heavy cream or coconut milk.
chai tea latte naturally carries caffeine, so a latte from it will have caffeine. Rooibos is a good caffeine-free option instead of black tea without caffeine. The way of brewing also matters.
You can brew the tea in warm water and later add the milk, like a latte. For a creamier result, you brew the spiced tea directly in milk on the stove.
chai tea latte from a cafe, especially one with sweet concentrate or powdered mixes and full-fat milk, commonly holds two to three hundred calories each serving, or even more. Simple black coffee almost does not have calories. For a lighter choice, you pick unsweetened almond milk and less sugar.
Topping with extra foam and a strip of cinnamon gives a nice finish. Milk frothers aregreat for chai tea latte. Vanilla extract or vanilla syrup can be added for extra flavor.
