Air fryers are useful devices that prepare crispy, golden food without a pot or pan full of oil. It can also work as a small broiler or oven. Basically, air fryers are little convection ovens.
They work by blowing warm air over the food. They do not really fry the foods, but they create a crisp surface similar to that of a deep fryer in oil. The warm air moves around it so it cooks evenly without need to turn it.
Air Fryers: How They Work and Why They Are Good
The main benefit is reaching the taste and crispness of fried foods using only a small bit of oil. A small amount of oil sprayed or rubbed on the surface of the foods helps to form that crisp crust. For instance, Ninja air fryers promise up to 75% less fat than traditional frying methods.
Air fryers do much more than simply fry. Many models can roast, bake, dehydrate and reheat. Some have preset cooking time programs and set temperatures.
The Typhur Dome 2 has double heating elements up and below for roasting, with 15 cooking modes including pizza, steak, grill, frozen food and reheating. The Ninja AF101 offers roasting, crisping, reheating and drying with a temperature range of 105°F to 400°F and 1550 watts of power. Its parts are dishwasher safe.
In an air fryer one can use foil, but do not cover it whole. Leave spaces for the airflow. The foil should be held down by food, so that it does not blow around, and it should not touch the botom fan.
Size plays a big role. Small air fryers with 1.5 to 2.5 quarts work best for one person making snacks or single servings. Sizes of 3 to 4 quarts suit two or three people and can handle two servings of chicken or fish together with vegetables too.
For families of three to four, medium sizes work well. For bigger families ideal are 6 quarts or bigger models. They fit a hole chicken or big batch of fries.
Some stores offer models up to 15 quarts.
Air fryers are great for reheating foods. They handle leftover pizza, fried foods and frozen foods better than a microwave, which usually dries them out too. Popular dishes include French fries, chicken wings, roasted vegetables, salmon, pork tenderloin, baked potatoes and stuffed peppers.
There is a bit of a learning curve. Smaller models limit you, because you can not stack food in the basket. Air fryers also take up a lot of counter space.
However the easy cleanup and fast cooking time make them handy tools. Now there are good models for around 30dollars in many stores. Greenpan offers models with PFAS-free nonstick coating for healthier cooking.
