Seafood is certainly considered a delicacy around the globe. While it is only enjoyed by those with an acquired taste for the meat of these species, the seafood is enriched with the nutrients that are a need for health and body, and that should be allowing you to maintain a healthy diet routine.
Dungeness crab is one such specie that is native to the west coast of North America. It can grow up to 20 cm and is quite popular for eating. However, if you are looking to cook it, or want to know what parts of the crab you can eat, here is a breakdown.
What Part of Dungeness Crab Is Edible?
Claws
They have pretty large and strong claws, and that means one thing if you are a fan of seafood. Larger muscles and more meat for you to consume. That is why you will find the largest sections of meat on these claws of Dungeness crab. All you need to do is crack the claws’ shells. You can either use those crab-cracking tools that are designed specifically for the purpose so you don’t end up losing any of the meat, or you can use some other hard utensil and then peel off the shell to access that delicious meat.
Legs
Legs are also edible and the best part is that they are easiest to access and you can easily peel off the meat from their legs. The legs taste subtly sweet and it goes perfectly well with the hints of saltiness that you have on most of the seafood. That would allow you to have a balanced taste that is surely intriguing for the taste buds and you will not be able to stop yourself from wanting more and more. However, the meat on the legs is lesser than the claws.
Body
The next thing you would like to move towards is the body. Although the body has a pretty large amount of meat, you will need some work to get to it as well. Once the legs are removed as well, you will need to crack the shell open and rinse the cavity clean. There are pieces of tender white meat inside the shell that is basically the body of your Dungeness Crab and you can easily consume these.
All the soft and meaty parts that you get on the Dungeness Crab are edible and you can consume them. It would depend on the taste buds and your personal preference as to which of these would you like to eat.
Shells
The shell of the Dungeness Crab is one of the hardest ones and that is not something you would normally like to eat. Nor it is edible for humans and is not recommended either. But, if you would like to make the most of it and use all the different parts that you get on the Dungeness Crab, you can make a fish stock out of the shell by boiling and simmering it in the water and adding spices and condiments according to your taste.
