Today’s pressure cookers come with impressive abilities and features that are all designed to save time and energy, while still ensuring that meals remain high quality and nutritious. Pressure cookers can prepare food quickly and they do so by using a fraction of the fuel and energy. But did you know that your pressure cooker can be used for more than just cooking your meals?
What is Pressure Cooker Distiller and How Does It Work?
Pressure cookers can be transformed for use in different industries and for different purposes. For instance, pressure cookers can be used easily as autoclaves for purposes of sterilizing tools and equipment. The pressure cooker can be used safely as a sterilizing tool owing to its high temperature and high-pressure cooking environment that is ideal for killing germs. Pressure cookers can also be turned into distillers that can be used in the distillation of various liquids such as water and moonshine.
What exactly is distillation?
Distillation is a vital separation process that is used commonly in food production, chemistry and a range of other industries. Distillation refers to the process of separating different liquid components included in a mixture based on their boiling points. To separate a mix of various liquids, the liquid mixture must first be heated rapidly in order to force the various components, each with their different boiling points, to transform into gaseous form.
When the gas is formed, it is the condensed back into liquid form before it is collected. There are different uses of the distillation process such as the production of distilled water, paraffin, gasoline, alcohol and many other types of liquids. There are many types of distillers available in the market but all of them work by removing impurities or contaminants contained within the liquid mixture.
Using a pressure cooker as a distiller
You may or may not be aware of this, but if your pressure cooker comes outfitted with a vent pipe on the lid, it is entirely possible to turn it into an emergency distiller, all you need are a few extra accessories. Any pressure cooker that has a vent can be hacked into a distiller. The distillation process is used for sanitizing water that would otherwise be deemed unsafe for consumption.
The high temperatures make the water free of toxic components such as arsenic that would be concentrated to hazardous levels by using other methods such as boiling. Pressure cookers are also great alternatives for getting rid of substances that would be difficult to eliminate using conventional techniques like a high salt content that would be problematic to eliminate using a method like boiling.
There are different varieties of pressure cooker distillers out there. However, they all include the same components. A pressure cooker must be present to bring the water to a boil and so that temperatures can be increased above the boiling point for heat resistant bacteria to be eliminated. There must also be a coil that allows steam to cool down quickly and condense it back into water form. Lastly, there must be a spout that can drain the clean drinking water acquired from the distillation process.
