Ingredients
Being a simple dessert with not much to it, coffee flan doesn’t need a lot of ingredients to get right. That’s why I’ve kept this recipe as simple as possible by keeping few ingredients in the list, all of which are easy to find and more than enough to make a delicious sweet dish! Here’s what they are:
- 3/4 Cups of Sugar
- 2–3 Tablespoons of Water
- 1 and 1/4 Cup of Milk, Separate
- 1 Tablespoon of Instant Coffee
- 3 Eggs
- 1/2 Cup of Caster Sugar
- 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Essence
Instructions
Now that everyone’s caught up and has the ingredients they need to get started, let’s start making ourselves some delicious dessert! First what you’ll need to do is…
- Boil Some Sugar: The first thing you need to do is to boil some sugar. For that, you’ll need around ¾ cups of sugar, and 2-3 tablespoons of water. Once you have those things, put them inside of a deep, non-stick pan and place the pan on medium heat. Make sure to let it stay on the stove for however long it takes for the water to boil. During this, use a spoon to keep stirring everything so that the sugar doesn’t burn. You’ll know when it’s time to take off the mixture from the stove when the sugar develops a brown-ish color.
- Prepare Dishes for Flan: No, don’t get too excited after reading that heading. Unfortunately, the flan is nowhere near being ready yet. But, this next step is still important. What you’ll need to do is to get a big dish or small cups; whichever of the two you plan to serve the coffee flan in. Then, start filling the bottom of whichever you pick with the sugar you boiled while it’s still hot. That way, it’ll be in place inside the dish already, and you won’t have to worry about dealing with that later. Once the sugar is there, you can place the dish/dishes inside the fridge.
- Get the Coffee Ready: Next, we shift our attention towards the “coffee” part of our coffee flan recipe. For this, you’re going to need just ¼ cups of milk and 1 tablespoon of instant coffee. Put the tablespoons of instant coffee inside the cup of milk and start stirring the two together as well as you can. Make sure that no powder chunks remain by the time you move on to the next step.
- Whisk Ingredients Together: Now you’ll need to whisk all the ingredients you need together so that they’re ready for the next stage of the recipe. So, get a large bowl and start by breaking 3 eggs into it. Get a whisk and beat these as well as you can. After that, add ½ cups caster sugar to the eggs and whisk it together. Do the same after adding 1 cup of milk and then the same once again after adding 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence. Finally, you only need to whisk one final time after adding some instant coffee mixture (however much you want, per your preferences). Keep whisking everything together until it’s all well dissolved, and then move on to the next step.
- Pour the Liquid Mixture: Get the large bowl filled with your liquid mixture from the last step and start pouring it into the dish with the sugar base. Make sure that it completely covers the sugar on all sides and is evenly poured. That’s all there is to this step!
- Pre-Heat Oven: To save yourself some time while you do the next step, start pre-heating the oven at 170 degrees Celsius so that it’s ready when you need it. You’ll want it to preheat for 10 minutes at least.
- Ready the Dishes: Get the dishes/dish that you put the liquid mixture inside of on a baking sheet. Pour hot water all across the sheet after placing the dishes so that there’s some moisture in the air while they bake inside the oven. This is really important because the moisture helps it all rise without cracking the dishes.
- Bake the Flan: By the time you’re done readying the dishes, the oven should be done pre-heating. If that’s the case, you can put the flan inside at 170 degrees Celsius. Bake it at this temperature for 25 minutes while keeping an eye out every now and then to make sure everything’s going well.
- Let It Cool Down: Once 25 minutes pass, you can take the flan out of the oven since it should be ready by now. Then, you’ll need to let the dishes/dish stay on the counter for about 30 minutes before putting them in the fridge after they’ve cooled down a little. After putting them in the fridge, let the flan dishes chill for 3-4 hours and serve them whenever you want after that!
