How to maintain your De’Longhi Magnifica.
To ensure smooth sailing for coffee flow, you must take care of your De’Longhi Magnifica. It’s easy to do; just know the basics. You don’t have to spend money on fancy cleaners or tool to do this. A little patience and some plain old water will do the trick when it comes to keeping your infuser in tip-top shape.
Cleaning the Infuser Mesh
First, however, you need to unplug the machine. And no, I’m not kidding. Unplug that thing from the wall. Don’t even think about trying to remove the infuser while the machine’s on; doing so will ruin your unit’s insides.
Just let it cool down all the way and then…there you go. Reach into there and give the infuser a gentle tug. It might seem like it’s locked in place, but it’ll come right out.
Now that you have the component out, take a closer look. The mesh will probably be clogged up with whatever residue is left on your grounds. There is usually quite a bit. It will probably be coated in old coffee grounds too. Any buildup of this stuff affects the extraction pressure and you don’t want to mess around with potentially wrecking the plastic component.
Avoid harsh chemicals; just use the simplest thing available. If you’re looking for something simple, plain water is your best bet. It gets rid of the oil but doesn’t leave behind any soap residue. It is safe and effective.
Soak it in a bowl of cold water. This typically takes about five minutes. You’ll see the dark water start to cloud up and the grounds will float to the top; this allows the water time to soak through the mesh and help loosen any stubborn bits.
Soaking will do most of the work, so you do not need to scrub hard. You don’t have to scrub hard either. You don’t want to change its shape by being aggressive. Just leave it alone.
Rinse in running water once it is soaked.
Once soaked, simply hold the infuser gently in your hand and run some water through it, this will clear out the debris that was loosened by soaking. Examine the mesh to see if there’s anything left; it should appear much cleaner now.
There’s no need to add a washing up liquid, these may leave a film which could affect flavour and could even degrade the plastic eventually. Running tap water is fine.
The next thing is to shake that extra water off. Tap it on the edge of your sink and those drops of water will come right off. You don’t want any water in there.
Moisture in this machine isn’t good. It might mess with electricity. So just give it a moment or two to air dry. When you pick it up again, it’ll feel nice, cool, and clean. It will be ready to go back in there.
It should snap in nicely, and the infuser should slide into the slot easily. Make sure it clicks into its seat and use the alignment guides to get it properly positioned.
You’ll be surprised how much better your coffee tastes with fresh grounds and you don’t need to dread cleaning this thing. Five minutes now keeps you from bigger headaches later. The flow is consistant again.
But, don’t skip the routine! Coffee oils builds up quickly and become rancid if left alone. It’s an inexpensive form of insurance to keep your machine running longer and doing a better job. You should of kept it clean.
