A DeLonghi Magnifica doesn’t require some intricate series of button-presses before you get good ol’ hot water.
There’s no secret menu or button you have to push to get it to happen; just turn on your hot water knob.
Why the Confusion Exists
There is also the intimidating-looking steam wand area and metal nozzle. There is also a selection of buttons on the control panel, including Espresso and Coffee. Maybe you’ll start pressing buttons hoping there’s some sort of hot water option, but no dice.
How do you fix it? Easy: don’t touch the steam button! There’s no need for that here. Don’t use the control panel at all. Do not use dial in middle labeled Min to Max. Instead, concentrate solely on the nearby hot water knob, right next to the steam wand.
There’s nothing else but this little dial that you need. Turn on the hot water handle and it takes little force to make it happen. Suddenly, steaming hot water starts pouring out of the steam wand into your mug. It’s clean and hot water, ideal for instant soup or tea.
It has a nice even flow… No weird sounds, no sputtering. It’s quick, just a few seconds. There are markings on the steam wand that say Cappuccino and Steam Milk for frothing milk, but you can use it for plain hot water just fine.
After turning the knob, you’re ready to go, there’s no further adjusting required as the stainless steel wand stays put.
I know a lot of folks has a hard time wrapping their minds around it. However, as soon as you think about it in terms of digital controls, that’s when you get confused. There are no beeps and no screen lighting up. It is an analog solution on a digital machine.
The reason for turning the knob is that if you turn it onto steam it both heats the water and brings air into it. But all you’re trying to do is get some hot water, so turning the knob skips the steam and just pumps the heated water out of the boiler. It is hot enough for most purposes.
Once done, simply wipe down the wand quickly with a damp cloth. This will keep machine clean. You don’t want milk left on it. This saves time during cleanup.
Because the machine basically does everything for you, having to do something manually like adding hot water explains why there was some initial confusion. You have to interact physically with the knob.
Turn the knob, put your cup underneath the wand and drink up. It’s simple, and it cuts right through all the noise that comes with moddern appliances. This is refreshing. Since then you’ve used it a few times and each time the water has come out hot. There are no slipping knobs, sticking knobs or anything else. The knob feels solid and would of worked well for you.
The Magnifica does have some bells and whistles if you’re unfamiliar with them. But don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be. For this application just use the wand and forget about all the extra buttons. Turn the dial and get the water. You do not need any technical know-how. And best of all, there is no learning curve.
The less time you spend fiddling around, the faster you get what you want. This is a little tip that saves time and frustration. Try it yourself. It is risk free and rewarding. Once you see it, you’ll get it.
