Even if you are big on ceramic and glass kitchenware, Tupperware is still an important part of the kitchen. However, these plastic containers are notorious for absorbing bad odors and stains, and people end up asking how to get the onion smell out of Tupperware.
So, if your containers have absorbed an onion odor, read on and we’ll tell you what to do about it.
How to Get Onion Smell Out of Tupperware
- Wash and Rinse
Before we move on to the advanced methods, first please try washing and rinsing the Tupperware in hot, soapy water. Use a scouring sponge to help remove any oily residue. It’s best to wash the containers as soon as you take out the food contents.
- Use Salt
After washing and drying the container, sprinkle it with a mixture of salt and baking powder and store the container with the lid on. Before reusing it, rinse the powder off. The onion odor should have been absorbed by the salt and soda mix.
- Sunlight
Sunlight is an amazing sterilizer and deodorizer. Wait for a sunny day, remove the Tupperware lids, and line the containers up outside for a few hours.
- Vinegar
Vinegar is also great for removing odors so try filling the container with ordinary white vinegar and leaving it to soak overnight. Pour the vinegar out and wash the Tupperware container with soap and water. Vinegar is cheap and can be reused for washing windows.
- Newspaper
Scrunched-up newspaper is said to absorb odors so it’s worth giving it a try. Add a bunch to the washed and dried container, put the lid on, and store until needed.
- Use Your Dishwasher
Run the Tupperware container through a cycle in the dishwasher. The combination of very hot water and dishwasher powder is powerful.
Remember to always use the top rack for Tupperware as the bottom rack is extremely hot and may cause the plastic container to become misshapen. If you are nervous to put your Tupperware into the dishwasher, fill it with hot water and sprinkle some dishwasher powder into it.
Leave it to soak overnight before rinsing and drying. The odor should be gone.
- Baking Soda
Baking soda is one of the oldest and most effective ways of removing odors from refrigerators, mattresses, and more. Make a paste of it with a little water and smooth this inside the Tupperware container. Leave it overnight then rinse and dry as usual.
- Line the Container
In the future, remember to line the Tupperware container with clingfilm before putting strong-smelling foods inside it. Leave enough overhang so that it can be folded over the top as well, thereby protecting the lid from odors or stains too.
- Bring in the Whole Bunch
Lastly, if you really don’t have time to test each of these methods to see what works, we suggest this routine:
- Put all your smelly Tupperware into a large heat-proof saucepan.
- Pour in some vinegar and baking soda.
- Boil enough water to cover the containers and pour it over them.
- Leave this to soak overnight.
- Drain and load the containers into the dishwasher (top shelf).
- Run it through a cycle then remove it.
- The containers should definitely be odor free.
