Basic Vanilla Custard Recipe

If you’re like me and prefer homemade sweets compared to stuff like powdered or pre-made custard from stores, try my recipe out. I’ll walk you through what to do to make great-tasting, creamy vanilla custard at home without having to do much at all.

This is what you’ll need to follow this simple little recipe of mine:

  • 2 Egg Yolks
  • 1 Tablespoon of Cornflour
  • 2 Tablespoons of Sugar
  • 1 Cup of Milk
  • 2 Drops of Vanilla Essence

It’s supposed to be basic vanilla custard, and that’s why the ingredients list is as basic as it gets too! Don’t worry about the taste though. Just because it doesn’t have much doesn’t mean this vanilla custard recipe of mine doesn’t taste great. Just follow the instructions I’m about to share and you’ll see for yourself!

Instructions

Go through the steps in this list to make vanilla custard at home!

  1. Make the Base: Start by making the base for the custard. This is where most of the ingredients are going to go, starting with just the yolk from 2 eggs. Top the egg yolks with 2 tablespoons of sugar and then a tablespoon of cornflour. Then, grab a whisk to mix these three ingredients up as well as you can.make base
  2. Warm Up Some Milk: Get a cup of milk and pour it inside of a pot. Heat up the pot and let the milk inside warm up for about 3-4 minutes. You’ll know that you can move on to the next step just when the milk is starting to bubble up.warm milk
  3. Add Base and Mix: Once the milk is warm enough that it’s bubbling, you can grab the bowl with the base and pour it into the pot too. Mix both things up using a wooden spoon until they’re dissolved together and let it sit for a little bit before adding 2 drops of vanilla essence to the pot too. Mix everything up one last time and let it cook until it’s thick enough.add base to milk
  4. Cool Down and Wait or Serve: If you did everything in the last step, then the custard is ready to serve! You’re done with the recipe, but now one last step to take care of is to decide whether you want the custard cold or to eat it while it’s warm. Personally, I love it both ways and it just depends on my mood. On a hot day a nice cold bowl of custard feels great, but when I’m sick warm custard is so much better. That’s a decision you can make for yourself depending on what you prefer. If you want it cold, pour the custard into a large bowl and let it sit out for a bit so that the bowl can cool off before you place it in the fridge for 2-3 hours. But, if you want it warm, pour it all into a bowl and serve the vanilla custard as soon as it comes off the oven! Notes

  • That little recipe on its own is really good, but there are ways you can make it so much better still. When I’m in the mood for extra sweetness, I like to add some toppings in the custard that can make it taste even better.
  • One thing I especially like, for example, is fruit on top. You can never go wrong with some good fruit when it comes to desserts. In custard’s case, you can add blueberries, cut up strawberries, peaches, bananas, mangoes, and so many other things to give it some extra sweetness and extra flavor.
  • Other than that, there’s also the option of crushing up cookies and sprinkling those on top. Plain sweet crackers or creamy cookies can do the trick too. You can also add cookies with a bit of chocolate in them, because who doesn’t enjoy a nice mix of vanilla and chocolate?
