Doggie Dinner

Use the basic ratio of 75% carbohydrate to 25% protein. For example use 3 cups of the rice/veggie mixture to 1 cup of the meat/bone mixture, adding enough reserved broth to mix easily. This mixture can then be packed in a loaf pan and refrigerated over night, then sliced in individual servings and frozen. Or pack into muffin tins or baggies and freeze.

Home-cooking for your dog allows flexibility and purity that you can't find in most commercial brands of dog food. Some dogs have special dietary or heath problems that cannot be solved by commercially prepared foods and owners must look for alternative foods. YOU will be in control of the quality of food your pet receives as well making sure to provide for adequate nutritional needs.

Chicken or turkey, whole or parts. Watch for sales on poultry and buy in quantity so you can cook up enough to last a couple of weeks or more. Wings, thighs and backs may be cheaper than whole birds. Ask at the meat counter about discounts for the less desirable parts of the bird.

Cool meat and debone. Coarse grind meat and chill. Return bones and skin to pressure for an additional 30 minutes, or until bones are soft. When bones are rendered completely soft use a food grinder and grind them very fine, in a meat grinder, or food processor. There should be no sharp or hard pieces. Mix the ground meat and the ground bones, adding a little broth to made a smooth consistency.
