Balanced Nutrition for Dogs

Home-cooking for your dog allows flexibility and purity that you can't find in most commercial brands of dog food. Some dogs have special dietary or heath problems that cannot be solved by commercially prepared foods and owners must look for alternative foods. YOU will be in control of the quality of food your pet receives as well making sure to provide for adequate nutritional needs.

DOGGIE DELIGHT

1 pound ground turkey

1 cup cooked brown rice

1 egg beaten

1/4 cup fresh chopped parsley

3 tbsp. wheat germ

1/2 cup carrots

2 tbsp. minced garlic

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Put into a lightly greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes or until done. Serve slices over dry dog food.
Note: Fresh garlic is good for the skin, helps repel fleas and aid digestion; parsley will take care of the breath!

ROVER's RICE AND MEAT

1/2 cup to 1 cup Meat of choice*

*choose one: hamburger, ground pork (cook all the way through), ground chicken, ground turkey, or liver

4 cups rice

1 cup vegetables*

*choose one or more of these: sweet potato, regular potato, green beans, carrots, spinach

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

2 cloves garlic

Boil all ingredients together in a large pot. Be sure that pork is cooked all the way through. Cool food off and serve.

For Variety: Noodles and Meat

Same ingredients as Rice and Meat Dinner, except for this:

Boil 1 pound noodles separately. Mix noodles in with meat and vegetable mixture when ready to serve. Italian and Chinese noodles will both work.

BOW WOW BREAKFAST

2 cups oatmeal

4 eggs

Cook oatmeal according to instructions. Add raw eggs to hot oatmeal. Stir. Cool down and serve.

For even more variety:

Try to substitute mackerel (a fish) for meat in some meals. I usually buy the canned stuff which has little bones in it. They can eat these bones. A little of the canned stuff goes a long way tho--it has a lot of salt!

PUP'S PASTA POT

2 lbs pasta (The shapely kind has more texture)

2 lbs brown rice

32 oz Cottage cheese

1 package chicken leg quarters

1 lb chicken liver

1 lb Mixed veggies (No corn, it just comes out the other end undigested so why waste the money)

Garlic

Italian seasoning

Place liver and rice in pot with 2-3 cloves of garlic add water in a 2-1 ratio (2 cups water to 1 cup rice). bring to a boil. Turn down heat and cook for 40 min.

Season chicken with spices and bake in oven at 400 degrees for 1 1/2-2 hours. Or till a little crispy.

After chicken is done. Boil water in a large pot add pasta. Cook 8-10 Min.

Dump rice and liver mix into a large container( it will need to be big enough to mix all the ingredience together. Large tupperware works great).

Place frozen veggies in collindar. Drain pasta over veggies.

Debone chicken add to rice mix. Add pasta mix. Add cottage cheese. Stir well.

Serve mixed with a little kibble or just by itself.

Caution this can be a little messy with the rice kernels and cottage cheese. serve in a place that can be easily cleaned up after the pig out session.

Save chicken bones and boil with a pot full of water until 1/4 of the water remaines. This makes a great broth for the next time you make the rice mix just substitute 1/2 the water for this rich broth. The dogs really love it.

RISOTTO

3-4 cloves garlic mashed

500gms/1pound minced meat

1 1/2 cups rice

4 cups finely chopped vegies (NO onions! they're toxic to dogs)

1 stock/bullion cube

5 cups water

Gently fry the garlic. Add meat & brown it through. Add rice & mix well. Add 3 cups water (with stock cube dissolved). Bring to boil & simmer gently for 5 minutes. Add vegies & remaining water, simmer very gently for about 20 minutes, till water is absorbed. Add more water if it gets dry!

Cool & serve, or freeze for later.

ENJOY!!!!!

This is very good for "high-energy" dogs like terriers, who do a lot of racing around, burning up calories! Or dogs who are a bit fat, and don't need too much protien in their diet!

CANINE DIET - RECIPE

1.75 - 2.5 lbs. ground beef

2 lbs. ground turkey

Brown meats together in 1/2 cup canola oil; then set aside

14 scant scoops (scoop included in pkg.) Brewer's Yeast/Garlic Powder (available in pet supply store)

1 or 2 green peppers

1 can pinto, or red, beans (with liquid)

1 can tomatoes (with liquid)

1 can green beans (with liquid)

1/2 bunch broccoli (or 1 sm. pkg. frozen)

1 can asparagus (with liquid)...optional

1 can (or..pkg. of frozen or 1/2 bag fresh) spinach

7 or 8 fresh carrots

1 butternut squash (prick with fork & bake in micro; use all BUT seeds/stem)

1/3 bunch celery

fresh or dried parsley

1 bag/box fresh bean or alfalfa sprouts

1 sweet potato/yam (I pre-bake by poking with fork, then microwaving for 9 min.) UNsweetened canned pumpkin may be used, also (I often use cauliflower, zucchini...whatever is cheap & in season.

NO ONIONS, CABBAGE, OR CORN) Actually, the veggies may be varied from week to week, so long as the over-all amount is about the same AND there is a good balance of yellow and green veggies)

Chop all veggies fine, in about 3 batches, in the food processor (do a mix of fresh & canned in each batch, as they process finer & quicker that way). Put all veggies in large (3 qt. bowl) with 1 T. garlic powder (NOT garlic salt!) & 1 t. salt. Cook on high in microwave for 13 min, then on 60% power for addt'l 10 min. Mix meats & veggies in LARGE refrigerator container/lid. Cook entire contents of a 42 oz. , dry-measure, container of old-fashioned oatmeal with 13 cups water (do in 2 separate batches!) in lrg. (3 qt. ) bowl...microwave on high for 9 min., then an addt'l 9 min on 40% power. Mix oatmeal in with veggie mixture.

* * * * * * Alternative cooking method which I've recently devised:

cut fresh veggies into chunks, put into pressure cooker. Open cans of veggies & drain liquid into pan with fresh veggies. Cover & bring to full 14 lb. pressure...cook for 2 min. ONLY...cool quickly with cold water over side of pan. Take cooked fresh veggies from liquid with slotted spoon & place in food processor with canned veggies. Blend all to a "sorta-puree". Then, use remaining veggie liquid in pan as part of the water needed to cook the oatmeal. IN that way, ALL the nutrients are remaining with the food. I also use my hand mixer to blend the final product to a "paste"...mixing in 2 (one is 33 C. & the other is 17 C.) rectangular Rubbermaid storage containers. One of these is stored in the fridge & used from. The rest goes into the freezer; in this manner, I have enough food for several days, but there is always fresh. If I forget to defrost before we need it, I just substitute a mac'n mac meal in, to temporize!

* * * * * NOTE: for one 60# dog, I would freeze about 3/4 of this batch in smaller (approx 6 - 8 C each) containers. ONLY try to refrigerate about 4-days-worth at a time, in order to keep it fresh.
